Porto Cristo

Porto Cristo was formally known as Cala de Manacor until its name was changed in 1912 to commemorate the old legend that an image of Christ landed in the cove (cala) in the year 1260.

The town itself has a familiar feel to it and you could liken it to a Devon seaside town, an amalgam of perhaps Torquay, Brixham and Paignton.

Costa Nord is an initiative of the actor Michael Douglas encouraging diversity and artistic creation. Every summer they organise a series of concerts free of charge in this old residence of Valledmossa. The concerts are in the open, under the stars. Before the concerts a meal is served, a delicious menu for 25€ per person. If you want to enjoy it you will need to book a table in advance (971.612.425).

Every year a number of concerts are organised in historical locations of Majorca. The Candle Concert is a piano concert where the artist and the visitors are surrounded by candle light enjoyng classical music.

This year, during the 26th and 27th of June 38, groups and singers participated with their own written songs in the 1st edition of the Mallorca Music Award. The concerts are held outdoors, free of charge with both public and jury voting to decide their favorite songs and artists.

May Festival at S’Horta

Located on the south eastern side of the island (about 15 mins drive from Cala D’or) S’ Horta (pronounced ‘SORTA’) has its village festival the last week in May. One of the highlights is the fair, which happens on the Sunday of the festival around 23rd of May.

This small inland village, which normally people just pass through on the way to Cala D’or or Porto Collom, sees its main road closed and the stall holders and exhibitions moving in. There is a stage set up in the square where night time activities of a musical nature take place.

Christians and Moors Fight in Soller - Majorca

If you find yourself around the Soller area of Mallorca on the 10th of May,  a trip to the port will give you the experience of a battle between the Christians and the Moors. Don’t worry though because it is the yearly re-enactment of the time when King Jaime of Spain routed the Moors from Mallorca. In fact, there are many such occasions on the island, but the Soller ‘battle' starts off the ‘season’.
